How To Install Natural Interlocking Cobblestone Pavers
Cobblestone pavers refer to the modern day version of cobblestone. In the pre-1900’s era, cobblestone was the first materials used in the building of roads and walkways. It was widely used and some areas of them have been preserved for historical value. The cobblestone was not a specific type of rock; but rather refers to a wide variety of rock collected from river beds and arranged to fit together with the aid of mortar. Paver Patterns or designs were achieved for decorative appeal. Today’s cobblestone pavers are uniform and interlocking. Although where the rock is obtained has changed, the use of natural stone has not.
Technology and manufacturing techniques now make an endless number of design possibilities. The wide array of stone available includes:
• Sandstone
• Limestone
• Granite
• Brick
• Concrete
These materials are available in a large variety of shapes, materials, and colors. The colors can be intermixed to create very unique designs or sheets of interlocking cobblestone pavers. This innovative installation method of installing pavers attaches cobblestones to a burlap backing, thus allowing them to be put in place in quantity rather than individually. The result is a super quick and easy way to have a cobblestone walk or driveway.
This is how to install natural cobblestone pavers easily with these sheets:
• Choose the area you would like to install the pavers. Mark off area.
• Prepare area by removing any sod or other material. The recessed area needs to be level and smooth.
• Frame around outside of area with two by fours. The boards should not be inside of the area to be paved, but rather outline it. The frame is to keep mortar from running out when it is applied.
• Place a base of sand and gravel. To determine what ratio of gravel to sand, you will need to know what type of soil you already have. Soil with a lot of clay will not need as much gravel because it compacts better. Consult your local lawn, agriculture or landscaping agency to find out your type of soil if you do not know. Soil type also defines how deep you need the gravel/sand mixture to be.
• Once you have placed the required amount of fill and leveled it; you are ready to begin placing sheets of cobblestone. You will simply fill the area in with cobblestone sheets and compact them down with a commercial compactor. You can rent one of these at your local tool and equipment rental.
• Next you will pour prepared mortar that is designed for cobblestone application. The mortar is specifically made for installing cobblestone pavers. Spread the mortar evenly across pavers, filling in the cracks between the stones.
• You now wet the stones down and using a long handled squeegee; remove excess sand and grout from the surface of the stones.
• Allow to set and dry, then sweep. You now have a cobblestone walkway or drive.
Cobblestone pavers are a timeless, beautiful addition to any landscape. They are durable and easy to maintain as well. Architecturally they add curb appeal and interest to any area they are used in.
